Investing in good health at Oil &Vinegar
I am so excited about sharing the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet at Oil & Vinegar this Saturday! However, I am especially looking forward to encouraging patrons to add both vinegar and olive oil to their daily diet.
It was not until I was in my late teens that I grew to accept olive oil and vinegar-rich Mediterranean foods. My taste buds were not quite sophisticated, and Cheetos and Wendy’s frosties were much more palliative to my young tongue.
But not all olive oils are created equal! The results from Consumer Reports found that only 9 of the 23 tested olive oils from Spain, Italy, and California were truly extra virgin olive oils. These specially produced, manually pressed and extracted oils are high in nutrition and have a particular fruity taste. Luckily, the Oil & Vinegar store carries certified extra virgin oils from a singular source in Italy. Its oils are guaranteed authentic.
Why infuse olive oil into your diet? The monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) are considered healthy fats. MUFAs may help lower your risk for heart disease by lowering total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels.
For people with diabetes or pre-diabetes, research shows that MUFAs may improve insulin levels and therefore better control blood sugar.
Even people with hypertension gain benefit thru improved blood pressures due to the heavily infused olive oil and vinegar-rich Mediterranean diet!
Remember that oils do contain fats and moderation is key to a healthy diet.
Everyone has something good to say about oils, but how about vinegar? What I love about
Oil & Vinegar store is that they stock a multitude of beneficial and tasty vinegars!
Vinegar has a colorful history. Red wine vinegar has been used for centuries and was credited with helping the success of the Roman army. Latin historian Spartianus recorded that vinegar with water was the drink that helped soldiers survive battel and manage changes in climates. Red wine vinegar is full of anti-aging antioxidants that may reduce age-related conditions such as heart disease and cancer.
Balsamic vinegar has been used as a gargle, tonic and air purifier against the plague. Traditionally it was made from Trebbano grapes near Modena, Italy. It is also high in antioxidants and potassium.
Thyme vinegar may act as an antiseptic and general healing tonic. It has been used to suppress cough and relieve intestinal discomfort. Oregano vinegar has both antiseptic and anti-inflammatory benefits. It may reduce bacteria, viruses, and help fight off colds and flu.
daily dose of sage vinegar has may reduce gum disease (gingivitis) and sore throats due to natural antiseptic properties.
Additions of Rosemary vinegar to your salad may reduce blood pressure in some people. Close monitoring of blood pressure numbers is recommended.
Most importantly, add vinegar to your diet for its taste and your pleasure. Instead of eating synthetic supplements, eat tasty foods that enrich your diet and learn how to add these colorful and flavorful oils and vinegars into your everyday nutritional regime.
